I was feeling a little Wobbly, so I thought I’d ask about everyone’s favorite and least favorite interiors on the market.
Best:
Mazda CX-9
Audi TT
Volvo S90
Worst:
Infiniti G60 . Everything about this is terrible.
Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead
. People rant about the amazing craftsmanship that goes into the woodwork, but I can’t be the only one who thinks it looks like a VCR cabinet. It’s an incredibly ugly design too.
Bentley Continental.
I reiterate my point about the wood and design.

Worst:
Anything with that stupid tablet glued to the dash. What. The. Crap.

Infiniti is not the best, but it is nowhere near the worst. Not even close. I’d take that Q50/Q60 interior any day of the week over the Acural TLX for example. Or the Lincoln MKZ. Or the Lexus IS (and I actually don’t mind the IS’ interior).
Agree with the best list though. Especially the Volvo.

A *fancy* VCR cabinet!

Worst: BMW i8.
In a car this expensive, having a screen that just looks like an afterthought is really bad. Would I own one, absolutely, but I’d still hate the screen.

It’s huge. I got this shit for a loaner. I was shocked how big that tablet shit is

Not to be biased, but I absolutely love the interior on my F-Type.

I’d accept them if they were retractable, but they’re just....stuck on there.

Counterpoint:
Any new Mazda:
3
6
CX-5
Miata
2

Not a counterpoint. It sucks. In everything they do it on. Be that Mazda, Lexus, or BMW. It’s just gaudy, in the way, and a really lazy implementation when it just sticks up like that.

I can oversee the huge TV in front of me. I can live with ugly. However, being able to control the cursor and buttons on that screen from a tiny wonky pad in center console while driving and hitting bumps... It gets me highly irate. Makes me want to throw things at the TV.

Just to keep to the sticking out of the dash theme, the new CX5:

I’ll give big ups to the new E-Class and upcoming Lexus LC since they are leading the next level of contemporary interior design. They make the Bugatti Chiron interior look very down market.
The other Lexus interiors bug me because there is a stark difference between the soft and hard materials. It’s like a textural on off switch. They arent the wordt but the bother me to no end. Actual crappy interiors are mostly due to being dated or have this same Lexus issue but without decent materials to make up for it.
By the way, that comment about the VCR cabinet is so dead on I’m quoting it always! The wood choices for the size of the panels are usually awful.

counter-point. When Car apps become more prevalent and you can do everything with your phone in a dock of your choosing, you will be able to delete the tacked on style screens more easily than you would one that is integrated into the dash. Then you aren’t left with a giant gaping hole there.
![]() 12/08/2016 at 09:52 |
|
You and I both know this will never happen. With no standardization of connectors, interfaces, etc. you’re going to be stuck with the in dash screen. It’s been fine for a long time, why this tacked on crap?
![]() 12/08/2016 at 09:59 |

You’ve got a whole lot of shit taste confirmed right there.

Mercedes S-Class for me is ridiculous overdone with detail and curves, which is a shame because the last gen had a beautiful interior. Chevrolet have the worst current interior design for me in the mainstream market, and Acura is simply the worst.
I love minimalism, so every interior with lots of detail, screens and lines annoy me. For me, the best are the ones from Aston Martin (until the DB11), Volvo which is killing it and VW.

I’m okay with it because it doesn’t cause an unnatural bulge in the center of the dash lines. You get a nice sleek flowing line across the dash and it doesn’t get interrupted by a giant molded bezel. Counter point to my counter point, why not integrate them into the gauge cluster? pops up when needed and goes away after a brief timeout. A
lso bluetooth, no connectors needed, or possibly some form of OBDII connector.
![]() 12/08/2016 at 10:20 |

But then the tablet itself is the unnatural bulge?
I agree with your point, though. It could all be integrated into the gauge cluster. Ford is doing that, sorta, but then they also have the center screen.

I do agree that the Rolls looks bad configured that way, but I think I can get behind this
![]() 12/08/2016 at 10:34 |

That looks like a 3D model of a BMW interior that glitched.
Still love the i3 though.

That Acura has a little 3/4 window on the driver’s side but not on the passenger’s. Weird.

It is a much easier to remove appendage. To be fair neither one is ideal, and hopefully they are stop gaps until cluster integration and huds.

TT looks the fancies of them all.
Agree on the rolls, super dated. But I’m fine with the Bentley
I don’t like the Volvo, too bland but the screen looks force fitted, also don’t like the cx9, looks croweded (could be the picture) and the multimedia placement is terrible
![]() 12/12/2016 at 16:52 |

I completely agree with all of those except the Bentley. Well, kind of the Rolls, that one is specced with a hideous amount and color of wood but it’s possible to do them much better.

People rant about the amazing craftsmanship that goes into the woodwork,
thing is, there isn’t a whole lot of hand-work on wood trim, even on a Rolls. most wood trim pieces are your usual snap-in plastic trim piece with a thin layer of wood veneer bonded to it.
